DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
October is Domestic Violence awareness month, to help local churches address systems that perpetuate domestic violence. A new, downloadable resource "Breaking the Silence" can equip United Methodists to speak up and speak out about this malady. The 23-page study is for use in local congregations. This resource is available through the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS) web site http://www.umc-gbcs.org/atf/cf/{689fea4c-8849-4c05-a89e-c9bc7ffff64c}/BREAKINGSILENCE.PDF .
This resource studies the issue of domestic violence through the lens of the Wesleyan quadrilateral of scripture, tradition, reason and experience. It uses Psalm 139 as its biblical text. Author is Meredith Hoxie, Boston School of Theology, who has worked as a social justice intern with GBCS. The resource can help clergy and laity understand the complexities of these violent relationships, examine their theological understanding of this violence, challenge the way leaders of the United Methodist Church teach and preach troubling texts of violence, and learn how to advocate for victims of such violence in their churches and in the world.

MILITARY - COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: ARMY OneSource
Army OneSource (AOS) is working to expand faith-based resources to soldiers and families, offering resource support to local churches that have deployed service members or returning ones. The Coordinator for Community Support in New Mexico is ">"Boyd" Barger, and he works out of the Albuquerque area (505-263-8163), building awareness within communities of the concerns, needs, and everyday demands of military life on Service Members and their families.
This resourcing organization was created to offer assistance with many of the contemporary issues facing our military families and servicemen & women.
- What's different about war today? 1 in every 4 people in the US has a connection to the military; 90% of wounded soldiers survive their injuries and suffer severe posttraumatic stress; Reserve and National Guard members make up increasingly significant components of active Armed Forces; 1/2 of all active and reserve members experience multiple deployments; high tech era allows constant communication with families even when deployed.
- What common health issues are reported today? 75% have faced situations that were potentially deadly; 62-66% know someone who was seriously injured or killed; 38% of soldiers, 31% of Marines, and 49% National Guard report psychological symptoms.
- How is war affecting Service Member families? Stress, anxiety, depression; questioning of faith and spiritual beliefs; sense of insecurity, loss, ineffectiveness; confusion about changes in returning loved ones; feelings of rejection, despair, abandonment, hopelessness in all family members.
- What changes in behavior are exhibited in returning soldiers? Substance abuse; self-destructive, impulsive behavior; uncontrollable reactive thoughts; inability to make healthy lifestyle choices; dissociative symptoms; compulsive behavior; inability to maintain close relationships; sexual problems; hostility, impatience; arguments; social withdrawal; feeling constantly threatened by others; closing off of communication.
- What are we doing to address these "Wounds of War??" of the 1 million Service members eligible for VA services, 45% have sought care; silent majority of Vets (55%);33% of Vets live where there is not a VA facility; demands for services outpace the capacity of the Military today.
Visit the Army OneSource website or call on Boyd Barger to ask about the many ways the Army is rising to the occasion for our Military service members and families, and their mission to create Faith/community support. Additional resources and assistance that may be helpful:
