Methodist Church - Four Areas of Focus

The Four Areas of Focus express the vision and yearnings of the people of The United Methodist Church. Over the next quadrennium, the church will seek to focus the work of making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world around these areas of ministry:

  • Combating the diseases of poverty by improving health globally.
  • Engaging in ministry with the poor.
  • Creating new places for new people and revitalizing existing congregations.
  • Developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world.

The Global Health Initiative is major area of focus for the ministry of The United Methodist Church, which aims to combat diseases of poverty such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosisas well as provide health education, advocacy and infrastructure. We have long been a key player in the fight against malaria through the hospitals, clinics and missions centers we have operated across Africa for more than 160 years.

Poverty - More than 800 million people in the world go hungry every day. The role of the church in alleviating hunger and poverty is crucial. God has placed the responsibility for leadership on our shoulders. As a church that follows the teachings of Wesley and Christ, we have a responsibility to share the blessings that God has bestowed upon us.

The World Hunger/Poverty Program has been an integral part of Global Ministries' mission to enable United Methodist congregations to put love into action, through integrated programs that emphasize agriculture, food security, stewardship of natural resources and the environment, education, microcredit, enterprise development, supplemental food programs, and advocacy to alleviate hunger and poverty.

The mobilization of resources through United Methodist connections brings us closer to our goal of eradicating the root causes of hunger and poverty.

Church Growth and Development - Path 1 is a team of leaders drawn from national, regional and local levels of The United Methodist Church, whose mission is to provide collaborative leadership to evangelize the NEW USA so that we might reach more people, more young people, more diverse people for Christ by creating new places for new people. In response to vision pathway #1 set by the Council of Bishops, the national strategy created by the congregational developers, and the desire of many of our agencies and Racial Ethnic National Plans, Path 1 seeks to create the leaders and processes to regain our healthy denominational habit of starting a church a day.
