The pastor and two church workers escaped the burning Bethel United Methodist Church in Moriarty.

The Rev. Robert Hunt and two others managed to get out of the church building after a fire was started in the basement. One person was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The first began in the basement under the sanctuary. The sanctuary has been deemed unusable. Arson is suspected in the incident. An investigation is ongoing.

The mayor of Moriarty offered the church use of the City Center for Christmas Eve services.

Prayers and shows of support and encouragement may be sent to Hunt and the congregation at or to 9309 Indian School Rd. NE Apt. 17, Albuquerque, NM 87112.
