Bishop’s Itineration – Fall 2019

Dear Clergy and Laity,

I want to invite all the churches of the New Mexico and Northwest Texas Conference to a conversation about the future of the United Methodist Church. The Special Called Session of General Conference was held in February 2019, in which the Traditional Plan was adopted. I need to hear from both clergy and laity as we prepare to go into the General Conference of 2020 as to your concerns and ways in which decisions of the general church affect your ministry in local settings.

To this end, I have scheduled a series of meetings during my itineration across the Episcopal area. Please find the schedule below. You can attend the session closest to your location. This will be my third itineration as your bishop in each of the districts. We will meet for no more than two hours. I will be sharing a brief devotional based on Scripture, decisions of the Special Called Session, listen to your concerns going forward into our upcoming General Conference in 2020, and lead each gathering in some structured table conversation around how these decisions affect ministry in your local setting. There are many plans and strategies being developed, including amicable separation. As we move from division to vision, what are your thoughts? How might this impact the ministry of your congregation? What is the future you dream of for your church?

Who should attend? All clergy serving under episcopal appointment, the local church lay leader, the lay member to annual conference, which may be one and the same, 3-4 key influential laity that your church looks to for decisive decision making, and any other members you believe critical to the conversation. I really appreciate your ministry and your witness as we focus on the mission of the United Methodist Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I look forward to being with each of you as we live into the future that I believe God is calling us into.

In Christ’s Name,
W. Earl Bledsoe
