McCurdy Ministries Community Center thanks the New Mexico Annual Conference for their decision to support a capital campaign to raise the $1.7 million to rehab the old elementary school into a Children’s Ministries Center! Ministries located in the building will include preschool, after school care and Camp Stars Summer Camp, which combines STEM education with VBS fun. Rev. Diana Loomis, director of development and church relations at McCurdy, says, “We are so grateful for the New Mexico Annual Conference’s decision to support our ministries to the children, youth, adults and families of the Española Valley. With NMAC support we believe the expansion of our ministries in the name of Jesus Christ will make another 100 years of difference in the valley.”
The Mission Field: The McCurdy Ministries Board and staff have charted an inspiring vision for the future. The planning process has been rooted in prayer and motivated by their century old commitment to share the love of God through education and service. In the Espanola Valley Community, 29% of the population lives under the poverty line. The per capita income is $19,430 and 22% of those under the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma. In fact, 60% of the children McCurdy serves are being raised by grandparents. The community struggles with generational challenges, so while serving children may be the main program focus, working through challenges with multi-generational families is the over-arching, long-term goal.
Early Childhood Education: In the Espanola Valley, only 39% of children have access to preschool. McCurdy is planning to expand their excellent free morning Pre-K program and their low cost afternoon faith-based preschool.
After School Care: The number one time children get into trouble is 3 – 5:30 pm. It is essential to provide a safe, enjoyable and challenging after school program. McCurdy is currently able to provide a safe place for 25 preschool to 6th graders. Next fall, they plan to expand the program to four classes of 20 students.
Camp Stars Summer Program: McCurdy’s summer program combines VBS with STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) education. The camp runs seven hours per day for six weeks for kindergarten to sixth graders.
What can you do? In the coming months, members of the McCurdy Ministries Capital Campaign Steering Committee will be visiting each church in the Conference. Churches and individual donors will be asked to commit to a five-year pledge period. We are no longer operating out of scarcity – this is thinking BIG. Many of our communities struggle with some of the same seemingly insurmountable issues, but McCurdy has re-visioned their future and we can be part of making this way forward happen.
