On July 22, 2025, the colonias of Vado, Del Cerro & Berino in southern NM experienced heavy torrential rains which caused extreme flooding. Approximately 145 homes were destroyed or suffered major damage. Disaster relief and recovery efforts have been hampered because many residents have immigration, multi-generation, livestock and other concerns that surpass standard outreach.

Bishop Carlo applied for and received a $10,000 Solidarity Grant from UMCOR. The New Mexico Conference, along with the Office of Emergency Management of Doña Ana County have worked together to identify El Calvario UMC as the team to lead the work with Rev. George Miller as the boots on the ground contact. The staff of El Calvario are local, established in the community, bilingual, and are already partnered with resources that can be utilized immediately. Further, they will remain in the community after outside agencies demobilize.
