On August 25, 2024, a significant amount of rainfall caused the canal to overflow east of Shiprock, New Mexico, causing flood rains to cross over at U.S. Highway 64 & Milepost 25. Water run off traveling down U.S. Highway 64 flowed into the CCSD Admin parking and the school compound, causing flooding. Several residences east of the CCSD Admin building are flooded, with water running through their yard.

FCNAM distributed 16 food boxes to families directly impacted by the flooding during a community meeting. On Wednesday, FCNAM provided 12 sanitation kits. FCNAM will also include trash bags for the 12 kits. If you’d like to donate to Four Corners Native American Ministry to help them resupply their stores of food and other items, send checks to: Griselda Sandoval, Treasurer, NMAC, 11816 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112 (subject line: FCNAM).

There are a total of 30-40 households directly impacted by the flood waters. One home is a total loss (Zone A). This home was occupied by a 93 year old great grandmother. The EMT’s and Fire department rescued her and transported to higher ground. She is now with family in Cudei, NM (5 miles west of Shiprock). Her family pumped out the water from the house and are recovering her personal belongings not impacted by the waters.

Some families (~10) had their septic tanks breached and need sanitation supplies to clean up their bathrooms. One septic tank was recently put in the ground and came completely out.

There are three Zones the Navajo Emergency Management Department and BIA Emergency Response team are focusing their efforts on. There are a total of 20 families in the zone.

FCNAM Executive Director, Debra Yazzie’s parents’ homesite was completely flooded. Her car is a total loss. Tomorrow we will be assisting with clean-up of the trash that has landed in various families homes.

CHR (Community Health Representatives) are visiting homes and will be giving us and update on people and their needs. We have a briefing meeting each morning at 0830 hrs and a debriefing meeting at 1715 hrs. All volunteers or groups will need to check in with BIA/Navajo Nation Emergency Management and get a IC-214 log. The log will need to be turned in at the debriefing.
